Watch the video presentation: Opera Re-Imagined
PIETÀ
a new one-act opera by Jake Landau, was completed in early 2020 and is receiving accolades by the Opera World in the US. The events of the opera are inspired by a real place, the Ospedale della Pietà of Venice, where for centuries orphaned girls were taken off the street and taught to perform music. The libretto, by the composer, Landau and co-librettist and director, Andrea DelGiudice, will debut at the 2021 Narnia Festival as it’s European debut.
STORY
Cast against the dark, sinful city of Venice glows the mesmerizing Ospedale della Pietà, radiant with youth, hope, and, above all, talent. The Pietà is an orphanage that takes in girls abandoned at birth, often because of physical disfiguration or ignoble origin, and trains them in music. These girls, now figlie (“daughters”) of the Pietà, perform weekly to great acclaim, but only from behind a thick lattice, out of sight of their audience. The figlie are kept under strict lock and key by the religious officials who run the institution; the only freedom they find is in their talent. One night, figlia Alma Lyrica is granted permission to lock up after a concert. She takes the opportunity to open the lattice and, for the first time, actually see her suitor, a young man named Giorgio whose grandparents run the Pietà. When Giorgio asks his grandparents’ permission to marry Alma, his request is denied, but the proposal triggers some memory vast and terrible in his grandmother, Editta la Principessa. Alma and Giorgio decide to elope and begin to plan Alma’s escape from the Pietà. They do this with the help of another couple: figlia Odele Violista and Odele’s lover, Fia, a ragamuffin girl of the street. The figlie and their partners will learn what Editta, Giorgio’s grandmother, already knows: In a place like this, it takes a twisted kind of bravery to do what you must to survive, to a tragic end.
SUOR ANGELICA
is the brainchild of Director, Andrea DelGiudice, as the untold story of Suor Angelica and was inspired by the plight of thousands of young women who were “imprisoned” by the order of the Bon Secours Sisters, in Tuam, Ireland in 1945. “The Home for Mothers and Babies” was a filthy Workhouse converted into a facility for unwed, pregnant single mothers. The mothers were separated from their children after giving birth, leaving the babies in the Home, to be raised by the nuns.
STORY
We open the opera on Suor Angelica working as a nurse’s assistant at Casa Santa Maria, one such home for unwed mothers and babies. She is a “healer and nurse” after having given birth there 17 years earlier to a baby boy. The other characters there are all pregnant young women who were imprisoned and forced into unpaid labor until the delivery of their babies. In Pietà, we learn that Angelica had been raped by La Principessa’s (Editta) husband (Ugo) while living with them years 17 years ago. Following this, La Principessa sent Angelica to “The Home” where she delivered her baby, who La Principessa immediately took from her to raise as her own. The male lead of Pietà is this son of Angelica, a young man named Giorgio. The full extent of La Principessa’s lies are revealed over the course of the two one-acts, lies stemming from a deep self-loathing and a seeming inability to have mercy on herself. The recurring character of Genovieffa is deeply significant as she is seen repeating Angelica’s plight, and the plight of many to follow. Angelica upon realizing her son is dead, is thrown into delusion and madness, leading to her reunification with Giorgio, her son in death.

Historical information:
Although Neolithic people lived in this region, the first historical document mentioning the town is dated 600 B.C.
Narni was a Roman colony under the name of Narnia, a name that comes from the Nar River, which today is called the Nera.
In 233 B.C., with the construction of the via Flaminia from Rome to Rimini on the Adriatic coast, Narni became of major importance and it was heavily fortified because the road passed through the town.
In 90 B.C., Narnia became a municipally (semi-independent) town within the Roman Empire.
The first Christian Bishop of Narni, Giovenale from Cartage, was chosen in 368 A.D. and later was consecrated as Patron Saint of the town.
Narni’s strategic position, standing as it does above the deep gorge of the river Nera, has made it a target of many invading and barbarian forces.
In the 11th Century, it established its power as a free “Comune” (autonomous town).
Between the 12th and the 14th century, it reached its greatest splendor.
In 1371, the Pope Reformed the Statutes of the city and Narni became part of the Papal State.
Narni developed a school of painting and goldsmithing. Many artists of the renaissance period produced work for clients and patrons in Narni: Rosellino, Ghirlandaio, Gozzoli, Vecchietta, Antoniazzo, Romano and Spagna.
On the 17th of July 1527, the Lanzichenecchi (northern mercenaries) stopped on their way back from the sacking of Rome and destroyed Narni.
Slowly the walls, buildings, and churches were rebuilt, and by the end of the century, Narni had been re-established.
After the rebuilding, many important artists returned to Narni, including Vignola and Zuccari. Also Sangallo and Scalza, who took part in the reconstruction of the town.
In 1664 the town library was founded. Many famous people were born in Narni, including: the emperor M.C. Nerva, Gattamelata, the Beata Lucia, Bernardo Eroli, Galeotto Marzio, and S. Cassio.
